Some say the world will end with fire.

Others say with ice.

From what I've tasted of desire

I hold with those that favor fire.

But if I had to perish twice,

I think I know enough of hate,

To say that for destruction ice,

Is also great and would suffice.

MEAN OLD MAN

Just before 8:00 this morning we had a knock on our door. Anyone knocking on our door at any time is a strange happening here. I went upstairs to answer it and it was one of our neighbor kids. It was cold outside and she asked me if I would drive her to school. I thought about it for a few seconds and told her NO she would need to go home and ask her mom for the ride. I felt really, really bad when I shut the door because it was quite cold out there (8 degrees). I felt like a mean old man but as I watched her out the window she didn't go back home to ask her mom she just trudged along toward the school.

My kids all walked to school every day in three feet of snow, up hill both ways, with tempertures below zero (our oldest two boys really did do this about 1/2 mile to the bus stop) and so did I. Guess she'll make it.

NOT SURE I'LL GET OVER FEELING LIKE A MEAN OLD MAN THOUGH.

Actually, I look at this totally different. If my daughter asked a neighborhood man to drive her to school, I would be really upset! Even if she knew him from church, I wouldn't want my young daughter riding alone with an adult man. And also, this protects you from possible false accusations. Maybe living where I live just makes me more cautious.

I wrote a comment and then it ended up not posting. When I came back I saw that Delirious had commented at the same time I was trying to comment. :0) Maybe that's why mine didn't take.

I basically said the same thing Delirious said. If you had taken her to school, you'd have sure had to take Inklings with you. It makes me wonder if the mom knew she was asking you. Did the mom tell her to walk and the girl didn't want to because it was too cold? Did her mom tell her to go ask one of the neighbors? If she did that she was wrong, she should have called you herself. You made a good call by telling her no.

I know I made a good call but it doesn't make me feel any less MEAN. It was cold this morning.
