Some say the world will end with fire.

Others say with ice.

From what I've tasted of desire

I hold with those that favor fire.

But if I had to perish twice,

I think I know enough of hate,

To say that for destruction ice,

Is also great and would suffice.

SHADOW LAKE

I just returned from the Shadow Lake fire in Oregon. Our base camp was at Hoodoo Ski Resort. When I first arrived the fire was 450+ acres and burning pretty hot and spotting all over the place. Which is what you would expect in this type of timber. When I left it was 10,000 acres+ and was secured along most of the perimeter. The weather changed significantly and the fog rolled in from the ocean and raised the humidity to 100% for a couple of days. I had forgotten how miserable that is to be wet all over from the atmosphere and not be able to get dry unless you went inside a building.

The fire burned the south side of Mount Washington as well as burning through a boys camp and many structures. The firefighters did great. They brought the fire through the structures and didn't lose a single one. There were over 40 pumps and 220 miles of hose and over 200 sprinkler kits out on the fire. It was amazing for me to see where they took the fire through and those structures won't have to worry about fire for at least 10 years.

It was a tough fire for me because of all the supplies that went out and came back. I worked harder than usual to stay in front of the fire fire fighters with the supplies they needed. I also came home really tired.

I'M NOT HALF THE MAN I USED TO BE.
